jonathanschork films...
with the narrative style of a writer & an eye for composition trained in photography, jonathan schork creates movies more akin to illustrated books than conventional video fare. working in both narrative & documentary media, in short & long form, from scripts he writes & directs personally, schork has been able to produce a steady inventory of unusual, often experimental movies since his debut in 2008 with the feature film voile: sails in the desert. schork shoots mostly on panasonic HD cameras and builds his films on adobe editing software. there are always ongoing projects, and anyone interested in participating in pre- or post-production, cast, or crew should please feel free to contact the studios.
tsuki no mon: yurei no mori (moongate: forest of ghosts): this deeply personal documentary short from 2011, inspired by the annual temple-burn event at burning man, explored themes of love & loss reflected on a 22' tall wood sculpture installed in key west in 2010, and burned in a private ceremony on big torch key some months later. paying homage to the japanese culture from which the moongate architectural form is derived, the film features japanese calligraphy and a classical gagaku soundtrack.

movies worth seeing (aka, "movies we wish we'd made")
automata (2014)~ this fascinating movie evocative of post-apocalyptic giants mad max & blade runner has so many moments of deep pathos-- from the very first scene, where we see a robot "pleading" for it's life-- that it ends up feeling more like a philosophical rumination on the nature of humanity than a low-budget sci-fi flick. the only weak spot for us was antonio banderas in the lead role as a burned-out insurance cop, but he turned in a serviceable performance that in no way vitiated the contributions of the rest of the cast. a beautiful cautionary tale about the dark path of human impacts on their world. two big thumbs up (plus a wince from the department of envy)!
